John Shanks studied Cinema and Humanities at Queen Mary College and Birkbeck College of the University of London and is now a postgraduate researcher in Music at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has a particular interest in how performance in the present transforms music composed in the historical past and how music compares to other performing arts, such as drama or dance, which face the same challenge of performing historical works in a way which is faithful to the period of the work’s creation and engaging to a present-day audience.
