Mattias Frey

Mattias Frey is Head of the Department of Media, Culture and Creative Industries at City, University of London. Before that, he was professor of film and media at the University of Kent, and general editor of the journal Film Studies. The history of the historical film remains one of his main research interests. His scholarly work examines film and other moving-image media in the context of their cultural and industrial institutions: e.g., production, distribution, regulation, exhibition, reception, and education practices and discourses.

Among the books he has authored or edited are Audio History des Films: Sonic Icons, Auditive Histosphäre, Authentizitätsgefühl (Bertz + Fischer, 2018, co-written with Winfried Pauleit and Rasmus Greiner) and Postwall German History: History, Film History, and Cinephilia (Berghahn, 2013). His most recent monograph projects Algorithm and Curation: Recommender Systems’ Remediation of Film Culture and Beyond the Filter Bubble: Use Diversity in VOD Recommender Systems are due for publication in 2020.
